Most people now a days have access to a mobile phone. Some lucky people have an iphone. OK it won't replace a DSLR however you may not always be carrying your slr so if space and weight are a problem here are a few gadgets that might help you out

The Sony QX10 your lens goes on your camera.
You control it with your phone, and the images upload directly to your camera roll as you shoot. Your iphone acts as a live viewfinder, it sees what the lens sees. The QX lenses use NFC (if your phone is into that sort of thing) or create their very own Wi-Fi signal.
